Extruded acrylic

The failure mode to guard against is a quotation written as "3 mm acrylic" with no route specified. Two bidders can quote that line honestly and differ by a large margin because one priced cast and the other priced extruded. State the route, the light transmission percentage for opal grades, and the required UV stabilisation in the schedule itself. The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice, introduced in January 2017, reshaped this market. One honest caveat, and it is an important one. The classification difference between FR and A2 is a large one in price, so do not let a supplier's product page be the last word: confirm the required class for your specific building with Civil Defence or the authority having jurisdiction, in writing, before you issue the purchase order. Two further specification points are routinely missed. Ask for the aluminium skin gauge, not just the total panel thickness — a 4 mm panel with 0.3 mm skins and a 4 mm panel with 0.5 mm skins are different products, and the thinner one oil-cans visibly on large fascias. Self-adhesive vinyl carries the same trap as acrylic — one generic line item, two products, one price gap that looks like a bargain until it is installed.
Cast film is made by casting liquid PVC onto a carrier and curing it. Because it is never mechanically stretched, it carries almost no internal stress. It is thin, typically around 2 mil, conforms to compound curves and rivets, and carries an outdoor durability rating usually in the five to seven year range. Neither is better. Calendered film is the economically correct answer for flat, short-life work — a promotional window graphic with a six-month campaign life does not need a seven-year film, and specifying one is waste. Cast film is correct for vehicle graphics, contoured surfaces and any installation you do not intend to revisit. What is never correct is letting the substitution happen silently between quotation and delivery.
Four things belong in a print-media specification:
- Construction and thickness. Cast or calendered, stated in mil or micron, not described as "premium".
- The manufacturer's stated durability, vertical exposure. Durability ratings are published against exposure angle and geography; a vertical-exposure figure from a temperate test market is not a Gulf rooftop figure. Ask what the regional derate is.

LED and Hardware: The Part That Fails First
Illumination is where sign warranties are actually consumed. Modules, drivers and profiles are usually the smallest line on the bill of materials and the largest source of callbacks, because a failed driver takes an entire sign dark and a lift booking to reach it.
Specify the ingress protection rating explicitly — IP65 for most enclosed sign boxes, IP67 where modules sit in an exposed or wash-down location. Buyers tend to file signage permits under "someone else's problem". They are not, because the permit dictates what the sign may be made of, how big it may be and what it may say — all of which are procurement inputs.

Four requirements shape the specification directly:
- Arabic content is mandatory and, under the 2019 regulations, must be accurate and sound. Bad machine translation is a rejection risk, and correcting it after the faces are cut is a re-manufacture, not an edit.

One practical note on sheet goods that buyers new to the category underestimate: acrylic and composite panel are dimensionally bulky, edge-fragile and low-density. Freight is charged on volume, damage rates in transit are meaningful, and protective film integrity on arrival is a real acceptance criterion. Build inspection on receipt into the process and agree the damage tolerance before the first shipment, not after it.
